Vertical Race

Kilometre Vertical de St-Martin Vesubie Vertical Race championnats de France

Today is the Vertical Race, Kilomètre vertical of St-Martin Vésubie.

I’m tired of resting!

That is 3 days I’m resting and eating pasta. :P Good lifestyle has a strong impact on sport performance. At least the week before short but intense events I try my best to match usual recommendations.

Vertical race Day

Saturday morning 7:20AM it is pretty easy to wake-up, I slept so much in the last 3 days :) Lucky me I’m not really in a hurry as my starting slot is at 11:28AM. I just need to be in St-Martin Vésubie by 10AM to get my dossard and chat with the friendly runners.

pasta in water perfect breakfast for a vertical raceFor breakfast: white pasta in water, yammy! :P I don’t expect to get any energy from those pasta, whoever I’m sure that I’ll have them digested by the time I’ll be running while not feeling hungry.

Arrived in St-Martin Vésubie, I have plenty of time to chat with friends, to get changed, to warm-up just a little, joints and tendons and to swallow several cubes of French fruit jelly.

A last sip of water 5mn before being called to the pre-start line…

11:27:59

11:28:00 No stress, I’m on the junction to the start line, a last 3mn warm-up to make sure heart-rate, breathing rhythm are up to speed.

Fast start

Green light, the start is steep and I have the feeling to be definitely going too fast, much faster than during the recognition I did two weeks ago. In the end I’ll be only 4% faster on this section, but it is very steep and maybe I’m not warm enough :(. That is +100m in 3’38sec.

For the next 700m I’ll force myself to slow down to make it up to the top. I’ll run only in the short “flat” sections. I can feel my heart going very high on those sections; adrenaline must be helping as I can cope with the red zone for some time ;)

Still every 100m section I realize I’m saving seconds. I must be in good conditions.

800m it starts to get hard

From 800m to 1000m I’m scarred again I won’t be able to keep the pace to the top. The heart-rate has been in red zone for some long periods. I may have forgotten to blow air out once or twice (yes it happens to me :)).  I’m focused on managing the resources and staying fully motivated to convert my training period in some results.

The +1000m sign

Not yet arrived, the race is +1150m. But I fill much better. I know the next 100m are going to be very hard as it is the steepest section, but it is going to be short. We are nearly finished. I release whatever energy I have got left in my muscles.

The last 200m “horizontal” to go

I see a friend to overtake. Find the motivation where you can. I finish the last 200m running, heart going full throttle.

Done!

I need some time to recover. I forget to stop my timer on the watch. When I look at it, it says 55’46” I’m already very happy with this time. Exact time being 55’07.0”, a 4’31” improvements from last year!  After only 3 months training for running, including one focusing vertical. Give me some more time and I’ll run it in 51’ ;)

Give me two more months and I’ll run 8 marathons trails in 31 days!
